What HCPE offers

RAD Basic Physical Defense
The RAD Basic Physical Defense (BPD) course is composed of lecture, discussion, and self defense techniques, and is suitable for women of all ages and abilities. It focuses on awareness and risk reduction strategies, and provides physical defense options for a variety of situations. RAD is not a martial arts system, nor does it require students to be trained athletes to use the techniques taught. During the final class of a BPD course, a dynamic simulation exercise is held in which the students use their new skills to defeat trained "attackers" wearing specially padded suits.

The BPD course meets for fifteen hours, divided into five three-hour blocks.

Advanced RAD
The Advanced RAD Self-Defense Program is intended for women who have completed the RAD Basic course. There is no lecture component to the Advanced course. The focus of the Advanced course is to address more complex situations and provide additional options above and beyond the material the BPD course covers. Class begins with a review of the material from the BPD course. After the review, students cover additional tools for dealing with standard one-on-one confrontations. After that, the students are given tools for dealing with situations involving weapons or multiple assailants. Students are repeatedly reminded that all options are available to them, not only physical options, and students are always encouraged to consider all of their options whenever making decisions regarding the best course of action.

Like the BPD course, the Advanced course also ends with dynamic simulation. For an Advanced simulation, this may include disorienting conditions such as light or sound distractions, multiple simultaneous attackers, or the introduction of a simulated weapon.

The Advanced course meets for twenty-five hours.

radKIDS
radKIDS is a national leading educator in realistic and empowering personal safety education for both children and parents. The radKIDS mission is to provide all children with the choices and practical skills they need to escape violence and/or harm including: Abduction, Bullying, Abuse, and/or Sexual Assault.

radKIDS Instructors do not teach children to fight, but instead provide children with both the education and realistic physical resistance skills to escape violence and/or harm.

The program is divided into two age groups: 5 to 7 and 8 to 12. The younger group meets for a total of seven hours, divided up into approximately 1 hour and 15 minute blocks. The older group meets for ten hours, divided into two-hour blocks. Each class covers age-appropriate material on personal safety and defense, including: School Safety, Home Safety, Out-and-About Safety, Vehicle Safety, Stranger Tricks (including Physical Defense against Abduction), and Personal Safety (including Good, Bad, and Uncomfortable Touch). Each student receives an activity book. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children, and receive a parent's manual which includes the student material and additional information on the topics covered so they may talk about the subject matter with their children.
